ANALOG

Trends in Sound and Picture

The book of the exhibition at Riflemaker of how the ANALOG world quickly slipped away without us noticing. In 2009, the photographer Richard Nicholson embarked on a mission to photograph and archive central London's two hundred and seventy-four professional photographic darkrooms. By the time he had made it to sixty of them, the remainder had closed. By the time of the exhibition there were just seven darkrooms remaining. What is the real meaning of the word ANALOG (or 'DIGITAL' for that matter? And what really is the difference between the multifarious new ways in which we now operate, our lives having been 'digitised' more or less against our wishes. The book looks at the impact on music recording and domestic lighting and heating as well as photography and film. Text by Tot Taylor and Richard Nicholson.
